FMCSA dropped 3 rules yesterday — less paperwork for you, but don't get comfortable
Effective July 22, 2026: (1) you no longer have to self-report certain traffic convictions to your home state — states now share them electronically; (2) the paper ELD manual is no longer required in your cab; (3) corrected roadside inspection reports go back to the state only if requested.
Why it matters to youLess paperwork, fewer "gotcha" violations at roadside. BUT: you still must know how to operate your ELD and handle malfunctions — inspectors will still test you on that. And your carrier's obligations (MVR checks, driver files) didn't change at all.

Gulf Coast is the cheapest region at $4.546/gal, Midwest sits at $4.659, and California tops the nation at $6.126 — a $1.58/gal spread.

Spot rates cool off — flatbed's 17-week run is over (but it's still king)
Van fell to $2.99/mi (−8¢), reefer to $3.41 (−4¢), flatbed to $3.62 (−7¢) — flatbed's first drop after 17 straight weekly gains that added 69¢ since March. Load-to-truck: van 10.7, reefer 19.7, flatbed 44.1.
Why it matters to youOwner-ops: book strong lanes early in the week; the boards soften on Fridays. Company drivers: carriers feel rate dips in 60–90 days — a solid carrier doesn't panic-cut. Flatbed remains the strongest board by far (44 loads per truck).

Base pay is growing ~2.7% at for-hire fleets (2–5% at private fleets). Real benchmarks right now: regional dry van $1,350–$1,583/week; dedicated hourly $30/hr with 10-hour guarantee; owner-op median $160K/yr. Detention runs up to $160/day. IRS per diem for 2026: $80/day, 80% deductible.
Why it matters to youIf a recruiter won't put CPM, detention and home time in writing, you already got your answer. Compare every offer against these numbers — they're the market, not a wish list.
