National Truck Driver Appreciation Week began Sunday, September 13, and runs through Saturday, September 19. FMCSA issued messages of gratitude toward the country's 3.6 million drivers during this commemorative week.
However, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stirred controversy by focusing his remarks on promoting trucking automation — right in the middle of a week meant to honor the human work behind the wheel.
The contradiction didn't go unnoticed among industry outlets like CDLLife, which pointed out the tension between celebrating current drivers while simultaneously laying regulatory groundwork for technology that could replace them down the road.
What should drivers do? Enjoy this week's recognition, but stay alert: keep tracking the DOT's automation policy announcements, since they could directly affect the future of your job and the industry.
