Trucking company executives said this week at an investor conference that the truckload capacity correction is still in its "early innings" — meaning it's just getting started — and that the exodus of trucks from the market keeps accelerating, not slowing down.

The report, cited by Yahoo Finance, points to an intensified regulatory crackdown this year as a contributing factor pushing more small carriers and owner-operators out of the business, tightening the supply of available trucks against freight volumes.

For drivers, fewer trucks competing for the same freight has historically translated into better rate negotiating power and fewer forced rejections of underpaid loads.

What drivers should do: if you're still operating, this is the time to be more selective about the loads you accept and to watch spot rates on your key corridors — the negotiating window is opening in your favor.
