The FMCSA announced it will temporarily suspend enforcement of penalties for carriers whose biennial registration update (MCS-150) came due on or after June 1, 2026. The reason: the agency is in the middle of transitioning to its new registration system called Motus, and wants to give carriers breathing room to adapt without being penalized.
The pause specifically applies to carriers who were required to renew their registration but missed the deadline, as long as that deadline falls within the transition window. FMCSA did not give an exact date for when enforcement will resume, only saying it is working to 'stabilize' Motus.
At the same time, the agency issued a clear warning: it has identified phishing sites impersonating the Motus system to steal carrier information. FMCSA did not name the specific fake sites in its statement, but urged all users to access registration only through the official FMCSA.gov domain.
What drivers and carriers should do: if your biennial update came due after June, don't panic over fines for now — but don't get complacent either. Verify your registration status only on the official FMCSA site, never through links in emails or third-party messages, and keep proof of any update attempts made during the transition.
